(Rev.1) Package Leak Test Standard
1. Scope & Objective
Many piping systems integrated into rotating machinery or equipment packages require a leak test during or after assembly to ensure structural integrity and tight sealing.
To ensure the complete tightness of multiple mechanical joints (such as instrument fittings, valves, and flanges) and to protect sensitive package components from moisture contamination, a Sensitive Leak Test (Bubble Test) shall be performed as a standard examination.
2. Code & Standard Compliance
The leak test shall be performed in strict accordance with the following international codes and standards:
- General Piping Requirements: ASME B31.3, Chapter VI (Inspection, Examination, and Testing)
- Fluid Service Categories: Category D, Category M, High Pressure, or Normal Fluid Service (Refer to ASME B31.3, Paragraph 300.2 Definitions for classification)
- Detailed Examination Procedure: ASME Section V, Article 10, Mandatory Appendix I (Bubble Emission Examination)
3. Test Pressure & Safety
Following the rules of ASME B31.3, Paragraph 345.8, the test pressure shall be strictly controlled as follows:
- Test Pressure: 15 psi (105 kPa) OR 25% of the design pressure, whichever is lesser.
- Over-pressure Protection: A calibrated pressure relief device must be installed in the test circuit to prevent over-pressurization of low-pressure package components or instruments.
4. Examination Procedure & Key Requirements
- Pre-examination: A thorough visual inspection of all piping joints, threads, and mechanical connections must be completed prior to pressurization.
- Application of Solution: A dedicated bubble solution (leak detector fluid) shall be applied to all potential leak paths, including flanges, valves, instrumentation fittings, and equipment interfaces.
- Temperature Limits: Ensure the test fluid and piping surface temperature stay within the range specified by ASME Section V (typically between 4°C and 52°C) to prevent the solution from freezing or evaporating rapidly.
- Hold Time: The test pressure must be maintained for at least 10 minutes (or as long as required to examine all joints thoroughly) before evaluating the results.
- Acceptance Criteria: Any continuous or growing bubble formation indicates a leak and shall be considered a rejection.
